Physical Medicine, also referred to as Physiatry, is a medical specialty concerned with diagnosing, evaluating and treating patients with limited function as a consequence of disease, injuries, congenital disorders, impairments and/or disabilities, or pain. Emphasis is placed on maximal restoration of physical, psychological, social and vocational functions of the person. Goals are to maintain health and prevent secondary complications of disability, and to alleviate pain. Physiatrists can address injury involving muscles and ligaments as well as nerves, and have special training in therapeutic exercise and physical modalities; prosthetics, orthotics and the use of other durable medical equipment. Physiatrists offer an aggressive, non-surgical approach to pain and injury.
Physiatrists treat acute and chronic pain and musculoskeletal disorders and coordinate the rehab process for patients with spinal cord injuries, cancer, stroke or other neurological disorders, brain injuries, amputations, and diseases such as multiple sclerosis. We work with chronic pain managment, including prescription medications and medical cannabis.
